As the Senior Graphic Designer you will have a major part in creating a centre of excellence for imagery services at Dstl, working with a new team of graphic designers to help build the graphic and illustration capability within the organisation and promote the service you provide. You will also have overall responsibility for the day to day management of workloads, scheduling, tasking and prioritising work, ensuring deadlines and customer requirements are met. You will act as the point of contact for new graphic design work requests, taking a brief and ensuring you have the appropriate information to make an informed decision about the justification and priority of the request.

You will be part of a team that will develop and maintain the visual identity that Dstl has with both its internal and external audiences through your leadership, creativity and design skills. Responsible for designing a variety of products, from posters to corporate brochures and for customers ranging from the Chief Executive to senior military officials, you will be instrumental in helping to shape the visual identity of the organisation and develop an organisation-wide look and feel that is consistent within Dstl, yet recognisable outside of the organisation.

Working with your communications team and imagery colleagues, you will provide creative solutions and explore new ways to reach Dstl’s various audiences. You will also be an advocate of the Dstl brand and ensure that brand guidelines are met and adhered to, ensuring your colleagues around the business understand why having a brand identity is important.

Key accountabilities for this role are:

  • Oversee and manage the day to day tasking and scheduling of work requests, ensuring deadlines and customers’ requirements are met.
  • Develop appropriate Service Level Agreements for graphic design work.
  • Provide appropriate management information to demonstrate where resource is being allocated and for which customer.
  • Act as the first point of contact for graphic design requests, taking a brief and ensuring you have the appropriate information to progress a work request.
  • Work closely with communications and imagery team colleagues to develop exciting and new creative designs to promote the work of Dstl and the benefits of Science & Technology to its various customers.
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation to maintain the Dstl brand in line with brand guidelines, provide advice and support on branding issues when necessary
  • Maintain personal knowledge and technical competence through professional and personal developments, taking advantage of the various courses and training on offer.
  • Keep up-to-date with current developments in the MOD and Government Communications Services professional through membership of appropriate networks and forums

This is an important role within the Communications and Imagery team and will inevitably have a reasonably high profile within the organisation.

The role holder will have responsibility for overseeing the day to day workload of the graphic design capability within Dstl, including tasking, scheduling and prioritising work, ensuring deadlines are met and managing customer expectations You will also be expected to use your creative skills to support the team by designing and creating creative solutions for a wide range of customers and communications activities that will be used to inform Dstl’s various audiences.

The role holder will work closely with the Deputy Head/Imagery Team Leader to ensure that workloads and customer expectation are being managed accordingly, an appropriate Service Level Agreement is put in place and usable management information is provided to inform budget holders and the Team Leader where resource is being allocated and for which customer.

Communications and Imagery is a dynamic area of the business, sitting within the People, Engagement and Communications Division, with responsibility for both internal and external communications, events, in-house design, photographic and video capability and upholding the reputation of Dstl. The role holder will work closely with communications and imagery colleagues and others from across the organisation to produce materials that will promote the benefits of science and technology and the work of Dstl to various audiences through a variety of channels.

Person specification

We are looking for candidates with the following experience:

  • Experience of leading a small team of creative people in an agency or similar environment
  • An excellent portfolio of graphic design work that demonstrates creativity and a commitment to meet customer needs
  • An ability to visualise and Illustrate project concepts and future scenarios a strong advantage
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of using the Adoble Creative suite
  • Strong listening skills and an ability to take a brief and turn it into a creative solution for a customer.
  • Some understanding of setting performance indicators and line management would be beneficial
