Scope of practice includes adults ages 18 and above at the following sites:
Duke GI of Raleigh: 3480 Wake Forest Rd #500, Raleigh, NC 27609

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) would be predominantly outpatient clinic sessions at Duke GI of Raleigh outpatient clinic. Position will provide inpatient coverage of the inpatient consult service at Duke Raleigh Hospital (weekdays and day shift) as needed to cover dates of service that GI Fellow is not available. Prior APP GI experience preferred.

Description
The APP provides medical care to adult patients with gastrointestinal conditions on both the hospital consult service and in a general GI outpatient clinic. This care is provided in collaboration with the supervising physician. The APP will work the providers as designated in order to evaluate and provide ongoing treatment to patients presenting to clinics or facilities of Duke University Health System in accordance with established scope of practice as specified in North Carolina Board of Medicine Medical Practice Act NCGS Chapter 90 for Medicine and Allied Occupations.

Duties may include but are not limited to those listed below and may include other outpatient procedures or services as deemed appropriate by the supervising physician. .

Specific daily activities include:
  • Record the history of present illness, past medical, family and social history, perform physical examinations in both outpatient and hospital setting
  • Establish and follow plan of care in conjunction with MD; Communicate regularly with referring inpatient team
  • Prescribe appropriate medications to a specialty pharmacy that will handle prior authorization and other necessary paperwork; Order refills as needed
  • Patient and family teaching
  • Order appropriate labs, tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed
  • Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed
  • Document clinic, telephone, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system
  • Review lab results in Maestro, communicate and interpret results
  • Collaborate with HUB Triage Nurses regarding patient triage and return patients calls within 24-48 hours; Provide feedback regarding scheduling of urgent patient appointments
  • Review outside records including clinic notes, hospital records, outside radiographs, lab, and other test results
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to complete patient paperwork including medication pre-certifications for insurance companies, durable medical equipment requests, disability paperwork, and handicapped permit applications
  • Attendance at GI Grand Rounds is expected. Participation in other divisional educational events is also encouraged

EDUCATION
Completion of accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or PA Program at the Masters or Doctoral Level

EXPERIENCE
1-2 years of gastroenterology experience preferred

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION
  • Current NC License with the NC Medical Board
  • Current DEA registration
  • Credentialing through Duke University Health System
  • American Red Cross BLS and ACLS certification
  • Adequate CME as outlined by NC Medical Board, Duke Credentialing Office and AANP
  • Completion of required Duke modules (safety, HIPAA, etc.)
  • Completion of Maestro training
