Operations Cemetery Operative

About the role:

An excellent opportunity has become available to assist in the maintenance and care of Hendon Cemetery & Crematorium. In this role you will assist in the delivery of graveside services including excavation and back-filling of graves adopting tact, diplomacy, empathy and understanding throughout contact with the bereaved, ensuring all health & safety and appropriate codes of safe working practice are followed at all times.


This is a permanent role, working a 37.5 hours week. The role requires the individual to work across a seven day week which includes bank holiday (rota) including the requirement to work staggered start and finish times (rota) and as directed by the senior crematorium officer.

What you will do:

  • To complete grounds maintenance operations including planting, pruning, weeding, grass cutting, clearing leaf litter and refuse, laying turf and landscaping etc.

  • To provide other grounds maintenance operations as required ensuring the grounds are kept safe, neat and tidy.

  • In addition to the usual range of tools and equipment, the use of powered tools, hand saws, hedge cutters, generators and mechanical water pumps and light plant is required.


To undertake traffic duties control in a team throughout the Cemetery.


  • To undertake all mandatory training determined appropriate by the cemetery and crematorium manager/employer.

  • To report faults and defects to the team leader and undertake remedial actions, where practical to ensure a safe and secure visitor environment.


Your experience will include:

  • Experience of working in a funeral directors, crematorium business previously would be advantageous
  • The ability to handle coffins, cremation caskets and Urns including bearing a coffin in to chapel from the hearse.
  • Experience to utilise multi-media and IT systems and operate bespoke cremation related software. (training given)

  • Ability to work effectively in a bereavement environment and establish positive relationships with managers, staff, funeral directors, celebrants and the bereaved in a way that establishes confidence, credibility and trust.

  • Ability to complete a range of facilities management operations including cleaning of chapels, public areas and toilets, grounds maintenance, safety and security functions.
