Our Engineering function enables the delivery of our equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines such as: mechanical, electrical & power distribution; software, sensors & electronic systems; acquisition safety & environmental protection; quality assurance; ordnance munitions & explosives, as well as systems engineering & integration.

As part of the DE&S Engineering function, the Radio Site Protection Team (RSP) are looking for a new team member to supports the ADEWS Team based at RAF Henlow.
This role has direct responsibilities for provision of cartographic and survey services to support the Radio Site Protection Assessor team. The successful candidate will provide accurate data for the purpose of supporting technical assessment of impact of development on operational performance of defence radio systems throughout the UK and overseas territories.

Candidates should be aware that, under the Defence Estate Optimisation Strategy, RAF Henlow has been identified as a site for release. Further information will be made available as it becomes available

The services provided by the RSP cartographic team are:
  • To gather positional data on a wide range of radio equipment and the surrounding landscape using specialist survey equipment, via planned and ad-hoc surveys
  • Using AutoCad transfer this data to produce/update a library of site plans, to maintain availability of accurate site data to the RSP team and the whole of Defence.
  • To print and distribute mapping on request.
  • To occasionally react keenly to short notice requests for survey data, to feed decision making for other Defence departments.

Role Requirements:
Cartography - Ability to produce and maintain accurate station maps from data obtained by survey and other sources.
Surveying - To undertake surveys at Defence Estate sites around the UK, Cyprus, Ascension, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands.

To be successful, you will have a good understanding of grid reference co-ordinate systems and how they apply to mapping, and be able to draw a 2D shape from simple co-ordinates, using your knowledge of 2D modelling software tools. There will be a test of competence around this at interview stage. More details will be provided if you are invited for interview. Applicants should have obtained or be studying toward a minimum BTEC Level 2 in any engineering or science based subject, or equivalent knowledge/experience.

Due to the nature of this role, applicants must:
  • Be physically able to access remote locations over unprepared terrain, whilst carrying survey equipment on a regular basis.
  • Hold a current driving licence.
  • Be able to undertake flights and able and willing to drive within the UK and overseas. Typically 1 overseas travel per year.
  • Be willing and able to work away from home with overnights stays, for up to 4 consecutive nights per month.
  • Be able to work in a small team.
  • Be able to work methodically through a documented process and apply instructions.

It would also be advantageous for candidates to have:
  • Experience of using AutoCAD.
  • Experience of using GPS survey equipment.
  • Experience of field engineering and risk assessment in an airfield or other dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of radio frequency hazards to personnel.

It is worth noting that full on the job training can be available to candidates provided that they meet the essential criteria.
